Wines

Welcome to our wines section.

It is here that we will share our thoughts, escapades and discoveries with you. Where wine is concerned nothing is more important than what is to be found in the bottle but additional knowledge of place, time and the people behind the creation of every good bottle of wine takes the enjoyment of every sip to another level. Harper Wells

The world of wine is, believe it or not, one of the most dynamic industries in the world. Furthermore the industry is big - really big. Many would be shocked to learn that more land in the world is "under vine" than any other crop, and that includes rice and wheat. A tiny fraction of this crop produces wine of marketable quality and a smaller fraction still produces wine of a quality such that we might refer to it as "fine".

But what is fine wine and furthermore who decides? In truth there is no right answer and certainly no short answer. For some fine wine is 'wine that impresses their friends', for others it is simply 'wine that is more expensive than that which they would normally buy'. For investors and serious collectors fine wine is almost certainly 'wine which has the potential to increase in value after purchase'. For wine writer Hugh Johnson the definition of fine wine was simple and elegant; 'wine which is worth talking about' and for us, well our definition is similar. To us fine wine is 'wine which tastes better in the second glass than the first'.

"Buying wine from HarperWells is always a very educational and thoroughly enjoyable experience - they have sourced an impressive range of wines and his advice always results in a case that disappears all too quickly!"
Mike O, Richmond.

Just confirming the Spitfire Sauvignon was a good recommendation - very distinctive fruity flavour; initially a surprise but quickly turns into pure nectar!
Oliver M, Nottingham

How to destroy 3,200 bottles of "Champagne"

Last week, Belgian customs authorities seized and destroyed 3,200 bottles of Californian Andre sparkling wine that was discovered en route to a cruise ship. Andre, produced by Gallo, is one of several American sparkling wine brands that are still labeled 'California Champagne'. The shipment also contained other bottles labeled 'sparkling wine', which were not destroyed. EU law states that the name Champagne refers only to wines produced in the French appellation of Champagne. Other wines labeled as 'Champagne' can be seized as counterfeit. Click here for a VIDEO
