Grant Burge - The Barossa Vigneron
‘Burge’s Lifetime of Expertise at Everyday Prices”
Grant Burge Wines was formed 20 years ago by winemaker Grant Burge and his wife Helen and is based at the historic Moorooroo Cellars on the banks of the famous old JacobsCreek – in the heart of Australia’s BarossaValley.
Grant’s heritage traces back some 150 years to his great, great Grandfather John Burge who emigrated from England to make wine. As a fifth generation winemaker Grant is absolutely committed to the BarossaValley and strongly believes that great wines are made in the vineyard. With this in mind his biggest challenge to date has been to create great South Australian wines that fit into the “everyday drinking” category yet remain exceptional enough to proudly carry his name. The Grant Burge GB
wines exhibit the clean varietal character, fine elegance and typical intensity that Grant has built his reputation on – and at under £6.50 a bottle the value is outstanding.
Grant Burge has won just about every major award in Australian winemaking including the Jimmy Watson, Stodart, Brisbane Club and Montgomery, as well as pretty much every international award of significance. His flagship wine Meshach Shiraz has the honour of beating Penfold’s Grange on more than one occasion at the Sydney wine show.
Grant Burge ‘GB23’ Chardonnay & Viognier 2006
This wine gets the type of treatment usually reserved for very serious white wines. After a malolactic fermentation to soften the flavour, a portion of the wine was aged on the yeasty lees for four months to add extra complexity and viscosity to the finished wine. The wine has total freshness with pleasing aromas of melon and peach. It is crisp and medium-bodied showing notable richness and acid balance. Unoaked, it illustrates the characteristics of both Viognier and Chardonnay. It’s an ideal accompaniment to roast chicken, spicy Thai green curries or baked fish dishes.

Grant Burge ‘GB51’ Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz 2005
Grant Burge doesn’t “spare the horses” on his Cab/Shiraz either, allowing it a full 12 months in high quality French & American oak hogsheads. We were extremely impressed by the vibrancy of this wine and how the black cherry and black currant flavours knitted so well with the generous rounded tannins and oak. This delicious wine is ideal for everyday drinking and is an excellent companion too BBQ meats and rich tomato dishes.
