The 2005 Chateau du Gaby is very impressive wine – classic and traditional without being old fashioned. I have long been a fan of many Canon-Fronsac clarets. I have completed a little research and discovered that Ch du Gaby is situated on top of a hilly limestone plateau in Canon-Fronsac, amongst some of Bordeaux’s prettiest countryside (I can vouch for the beauty and the hills in this region having cycled the area a few years back). Du Gaby is an old historic site that dates back to the pre Great War years when Canon-Fronsac was considered way superior to Pomerol but for many post-war years the vines here were neglected, almost forgotten! The blend in the 2005 is 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet and 5% Cabernet Franc. My notes praised the great balance of the wine, exceptionally soft flavour profiles and great, enticing finish. It’s drinking quite well now but will probably not peak for 2 – 3 more years and will continue to develop over at least 8 more years.
Drink 2010 – 2018.
