GROSSET, ADELAIDE HILLS PINOT NOIR 2007
PRODUCER
Grosset Wines is an independently owned winery in the Clare Valley that produces six highly wines each vintage. Grosset was established in 1981 by Jeffrey Grosset in the township of Auburn in the Clare Valley, 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. The winery is stylish but functional and reflects the attention to detail that extends to the Grosset estate-owned vineyards and winemaking.
BACKGROUND
While various producers have built their reputation on Pinot Noir, none has equalled the success Grosset has enjoyed with this variety grown in the Adelaide Hills. Given that the re-planting of vineyards in the Adelaide Hills has only occurred since the early 1980s, their full potential is only just emerging.
VINEYARD
The grapes for this wine are grown in the Central Adelaide Hills region, from two different, low yielding vineyards just below and north of Mount Lofty. Altitude is between 450 - 500 m above sea level.
VINIFICATION
As in previous years, 40% whole bunches were added to each of the tiny fermenters which were plunged by foot every five hours. Immediately after pressing, the wine was run into barrels (60% of which was new French oak) and left on its lees for 12 months.
WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTES
It is tight, well-structured and has some gentle tannin firmness at present with fine, racy acidity to finish. This has silky smooth, even luxuriant texture with some mid-palate plumpness and vibrance. At present, it is finely balanced between youthful appeal and restraint that will enable it to age gracefully.
