Winemaker Didier Delagrange
100% Pinot Noir from a single vineyard site.
The impact that Didier Delagrange has had on this ancient family estate is hard to put in words. Despite the undeniable fact that the H. Delagrange estate in Volnay has been producing handsome wines for almost a century Didier’s influence has been immediate.
When we met with Didier in July 2006 we had spent three days traveling through the Cote d’Or tasting an astounding number of great wines from the 2005 vintage. Despite an overload of quality wines over the previous days the 6 or 7 wines we tasted with Didier all showed incredible potential. Although they were not finished, it was clear that they were going to be very special.
This great vintage couldn’t have come at a better time for a man who seems to have perfected his cellar techniques and has fanatical attention to detail in the vineyards
Pommard can be over-priced and over alcoholic, but when the best crus are made by the most gifted winemakers, they are probably the most exciting wines of the Cote de Beaune. Les Vaumuriens Hauts is an AOC Village vineyard is at the uppermost slope of the cote above the village of Volnay. It benefits from very old vines and soil that produces 1st class grapes in the driest of Burgundian vintages. 2005 presented the ideal conditions and growers in this region were swift to capitalize on the opportunity to produce small quantities of excellent Pommard.
This wine displays power, structure and flavour way beyond its modest price.
"The 2005 vintage for red and white Burgundy has everything you could want: ripe fruit, fresh acidity, well-integrated tannins and great balance. Even at this young stage, many of the wines reveal gorgeous fruit flavors and terroir." Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator Magazine
"A near-perfect vintage. The buzz surrounding the 2005 has led to frantic demand. Many of the most sought-after wines have been snapped up but, says Jancis Robinson, the great thing about this vintage is how good many of the humbler wines are." FT Weekend
