Winemaker: Stephen Henschke

100% Shiraz from 90 year old Eden Valley vines.

In 1912 Ronald Angas planted the sandy loam slopes of Mount Edelstone with shiraz. Located high in the Eden Valley region this vineyard came to be known as Mount Edelstone, meaning gemstone. The 90-year-old ungrafted dry-grown vines from this historic single vineyard are low yielding, producing a depth of colour, concentration of flavour, length and maturity of tannins unique to old-vine shiraz. Mount Edelstone has achieved a formidable reputation since its first vintage in 1952.

2001 provided the Henschke's with a good vintage which although warm, was supported by regular, if light, rainfall.

The 2001 is a very deep crimson in colour.  Sweet and spicy with a perfume of plum and blackberry with hints of anise and vanilla and nuances of white pepper and mint. The 2001 has aged beautifully and has a lovely, fleshy texture and soft tannins.

The magnificent 2001 Mount Edelstone (100% Eden Valley Shiraz) boasts a dense purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of blackberry liqueur, white flowers, and toasty, subtle wood. Underbrush, pepper, and licorice also make an appearance. With great intensity, a multilayered, opulent personality, and plenty of structure, tannin, fruit and extract, this beauty should be cellared for 2-3 years, and drunk over the following 10-15. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate October 2004.
