When we first met with Didier in July 2006 he was busy finishing the first vintage under which he had absolute control of the vinification (2004). We had spent three days traveling through the Cote d’Or tasting an astounding number of great wines from the 2005 vintage. Despite an overload of quality wines over the previous days the 6 or 7 wines we tasted with Didier all showed incredible potential. When we progressed through to his 2005s the excitement was peaking.
The 2006 vintage has handed Didier another opportunity to develop his skills and winemaking style. His small (but growing) production of white wines are his best yet whilst his reds show more perfume and immediate appeal than he has previous achieved.
For several generations the domaine has focused on Volnay and Pommard but in 2004 Didier began leasing a small parcel of vines from a long standing family friend, a parcel he has since purchased. These vines are at the foot of the hill of Corton in the vineyard named ‘Les Caillerettes’. Aloxe-Corton is a region that excels in sunny vintages and due to the elevated vineyards it drains very well. In 2006 the long hot Spring and early summer put strain on the vines. This was followed by the wettest August for years which was then followed a beautiful September and October. Upon tasting this wine we were immediately struck by how powerful the young wine was and how the finish kept evolving on the palate. Of all Didier’s wines this was the one which most resembled the 2005 in structure and character. Unfortunately Didier only works enough vines to produce 3 barrels of this delicious Aloxe-Corton, so that’s roughly only 100 cases to go round his entire client list.
