Saam Mountain Vineyards is a new venture that unites a group of around 40 South African growers who farm vineyards that span the premium growing areas from Paarl to the Durbanville Hills. The vineyards are all low yielding (around half the average) ensuring that the quality of fruit and intensity of flavour is superb. The venture is spearheaded by winemaker Pieter Carstens, whose inspiration and dedication to the wines is unrelenting. Pieter aims to show exactly what South Africa can produce by creating clean, pure fruit flavoured wines of real varietal character. His methods are ultra-modern and as a result any of his wines would be perfect for a master class in varietal identification.
Complex aromas of tropical pear, minerals, asparagus and canned peas jump out of the glass and this abundance of flavours carries through on the well-structured, luscious palate. Beautifully balanced by a crisp natural acid to create a long and rich aftertaste.
“A new South African producer that seems to be doing everything right” – Jancis Robinson
