Winemaker Tim Smith (Aus)

Touriga Franca & Syrah

The 2005 Azamor  is a deep coloured wine, rich with spicy and brambly fruit. Coupled with the intense fruit aromas, there are lighter violet and floral notes. The palate has a good balance of fruit and tannin, giving the wine a beautiful structure.

Alison and Joaquin Luiz Gomes bought this property in 1998, and planted their first vineyard in 2001. Their aim, from the outset, was to produce one of the area’s, and Portugal’s, most outstanding wines. The vineyard was planted to the highest density in the Alentejo (5050 vines per hectare), and the altitude of the estate ensures the cool nights mitigate the hot daytime temperatures to give wines with an aromatic elegance that is rare in this area.

Today, they have 25 hectares of vineyard on their 260 hectare estate, planted with Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Alicante, Syrah, Mourvedre, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
