Winemaker Kim Crawford

100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Delta Range

Spitfire is one of Kim’s premium wines. It is a part of his experimental ‘SP’ or Small Parcel Range. Each Vintage his team collect fruit from batches of exceptional grapes on the site of an old WWII airbase, tucked into the foothills of Marlborough’s Delta Range – hence the name ‘Spitfire.’ The fruit is selected from the vines and patches of vines that are sheltered from the cool southerly winds, grapes which vintage after vintage produce the ripest, most powerful and expressive grapes in Marlborough .

The saying ‘good things come in Small Parcels’ is perfect for this wine. This exceptional Microclimate produces a wine with that quintessential grassy, herbaceous NZ style, rich with immensely concentrated tropical fruit flavours. The grapes were machine harvested, de-stemmed and pressed immediately. The juice was then prepared for a cool fermentation in order to maximise the Sauvignon character.

The wine is incredibly concentrated and is always a “show-stopper”! It is beautifully balanced by the fresh crisp acidity delivered in every sip. The wine maintains a deliciously silky texture with genuine vinous richness throughout and ends with a long, spicy, fruit-filled finish.

Pale, almost white in colour, the perfumes of the Sauvignon Blanc are explosive. A blend of nettles, gooseberry and tropical fruit combined with the characteristic herbaceousness of this variety. On the palate the wine is intense, with tropical fruit flavours such as passion fruit combined with hints of fig. Rich and full on the palate, it is a blend of sweet fruit and zingy acidity. Long and spicy on the finish.

Without doubt this is a contender for New Zealand’s most impressive Sauvignon Blanc. As with most Sauvignon this is produced to be enjoyed as a young wine, so drink-up over the next 12 months. Abv 13%, closed under Screwcap/Stelvin.
