Wine Notes
Region: Hunter Valley

Background: ep-och An interval of time memorable for extraordinary events and important influences.

Semillon is traditionally the first fruit harvested in the Hunter Valley each year for still wine production. For Meerea Park, this signals the commencement of each vintage and this is our ‘epoch’.

Fruit Source: This premium wine is crafted from Semillon sourced from the Howard family’s “Somerset” vineyard in Pokolbin. The Semillon block was planted in 1968.

Fermentation & Maturation: The handpicked fruit was cold fermented entirely in stainless steel then bottled under Stelvin to capture the varietal freshness of this variety as well as protecting from TCA cork taint.

Winemakers Comments: 2007 started off very hot and dry which then led to very early ripening and harvest commencing in mid January. The warm weather also caused elevated alcohol but this also means a very user friendly wine.

Citrus with hints of fruit salad aromas on the nose. The palate is quite soft and rich for a Semillon, but this is a plus as it makes for a nicely balanced wine. The tropical fruit carries onto the palate which has a nice line of underlying acidity that keeps the wine tight and focused.

Cellaring: 5-7 years

What the experts say
"This is exceptional value. It's a cracking wine. It's a great mix of drinkability and cutting cellarability, the high, driving, piercing ring of lemony flavour splashed with musky, spicy, tropical flavours. The length is outstanding. I love the bite of flavour on the finish. Very high class wine. Drink: 2007-2014". 93 points.

Campbell Mattinson – The Wine Front – July 2007.

"2007 Ewok is one of Meerea Park's best ever Semillon releases. This estate has threatened to produce something amazing for several years, but somehow just managed to duck under the Empire's radar. 2007 is, we hope, the beginning of a run of definition and craftsmenship, which makes this Semillon more than worthy of its position in your drinking calendar this year. With brilliant fresh lemon notes, this is one of the best Semillons we have seen, with the precision and brilliance of a fully charged light sabre." Matthew Jukes & Tyson Stelzer - Taste 2008

" Aromas of savoury lemon grass and fine dry chalk, really restrained and pure, delicate hints of cut straw. The palate is super fine, really precise and polished, some lime and lemon citrus fruits, fine acidity and a soft, delicate texture. Score 92. Nick Stock - 2009 Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide
