Drink 2009 - 2016+
Arguably, Coudoulet de Beaucastel is the most famous Cotes du Rhone in the world – a Chateauneuf-du-Pape in disguise. The junior sibling of the Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape, this wine is made in neighbouring vineyards & to the same exacting high standards implemented by the Perrin family in all their wine production. 2006 provided the Perrin Team with extremely fine quality grapes, courtesy of an almost perfect summer growing season - the resulting wines is one of the finest examples of Coudoulet ever produced.
A blend of Grenache, Mouvedre, Syrah & Cinsault, the 2006 is a masterclass in combining balance and elegance with charm and immediacy. The wine has the tannins to provide short to mid term cellaring and fruit profile that means anyone impatient enough to tackle this wine in 2009 will not be punished either.
A stunning wine, the rarely seen Magnum format will make this the ultimate dinner-party classic.
The 2006 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet red, a beautiful, delicious, 12,500-case cuvee offering notes of root vegetables interwoven with notions of black cherry jam, licorice, pepper, and Provencal herbs. Deep and medium-bodied, it is ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years. Beaucastel and its subsidiary wines marketed under the Perrin et Fils moniker are consistently among the bright shining stars of France. I have been visiting this estate for nearly thirty years, and over that time I have seen all the elements of what makes wines great – an incredible respect for the vineyards, a conscientious, uncompromising work ethic, and extraordinary passion for gentle handling of fruit from their sites. Brothers Jean-Pierre and Francois Perrin seem to be gradually inching closer to retirement as their sons take more and more of a front row seat in the running of this outstanding estate. This is a marvelous portfolio of wines, from the extraordinary values, to the top-end world classics. While one could say this is as traditionally run estate as can be found in western Europe, the Perrins are remarkably flexible if they sense that quality can be improved. 90 Points. Robert Parker
The blend of this Côtes du Rhône produced by the Perrin family of Ch de Beaucastel from 30 hectares of vines that don’t qualify for the Châteauneuf appellation is 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah and 20% Cinsault and was just bursting with health and interest. The first three ingredients are of course the classic triumvirate of the Southern Rhône but I think it may be the Cinsault portion that makes this wine so approachable in youth. It’s an often under-estimated grape variety capable of oozing charm and fruit. “A wine to make you smile”, I wrote when tasting a sample of pure Cinsault 2007 at Beaucastel. The 2006 vintage was a real hit in the southern Rhône. The spicy, herby, complex style of southern Rhône wines is so easy to like. I really don’t think you can go wrong by ordering a case of a dozen bottles of this beautifully balanced wine. Jancis Robinson.
