Drink by end 2012
Pieropan’s estate covers 30 hectares of vineyard, all of which are situated on the hills of the Soave Classico zone. The Pieropan family has been producing wines in Soave since the 1860s. Indeed, they were the first to bottle a wine with the name Soave on the label, in the early 1930s. Nino Pieropan took over from his father in 1970, and was the first to produce a single vineyard wine, Calvarino, in 1971. The Calvarino vineyard has been in the family since 1901. Nino’s two sons, Andrea and Dario now work with him on the sales and winemaking side respectively.
Calvarino takes its name, ‘little Calvary’, from the steepness of the slope and the difficulty this presents in working the vineyard. It has the basalt soil that is classic in this part of Soave, and is planted with Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave. The Garganega gives structure and acidity to the wines, the Trebbiano di Soave perfume and richness of flavour. There are usually at least two harvests to ensure the grapes are picked at the best possible stage of ripeness.
The grapes were pressed and then fermented at a controlled temperature of 19°C. The Calvarino was not aged in oak but remained in tank until bottling. It remained in bottle at least two months before release.
Light gold in colour, with greenish reflections when young, becoming more golden in colour with age. On the nose it is perfumed and floral, with notes of elderflower and pear, with a touch of lemon when young. The 2008 is restrained but intense on the palate, with tightly knit, almond flavours which develop slowly in the glass. Very long and elegant on the finish.
