Only the sparkling wines from the Champagne Region of France are permitted to use the term ‘Champagne’ – so there are no Australian, New Zealand or South African Champagnes, these are just called sparkling wines.
Just like with other wines, there can be a vast difference in taste between one Champagne and another – this is caused by a number of influencing factors such as the grape variety used (Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay can be used singularly or combined in a blend), where in the vast Champagne Region the wine comes from, the vintage, how long the wine is aged before release, who made it etc. etc. This makes Champagne a vast and fascinating subject with different styles to suit different occasions and one to suit everyone.
At HarperWells we work with several of the big name ‘Grande Marques’ to bring you fantastic examples of world famous wines but we also offer you the opportunity to try some wonderful Champagne from names you may never have heard of before.
