Most Montepulciano at this price comes either from negociants buying bulk wines or from co-ops but this has a distinctly hands-on feel. This wine is deep coloured, clean, fresh and plummy on the nose, rich, supple and accessible on the palate. The fresh, primary fruit characters are maximised by the fact that it is not aged in oak, making it approachable and ready to drink.
superb for several years
The Gran Sasso wines are made by young winemaker Marco Flacco and display a freshness and directness of fruit that is seldom found in this region. This wine has all the characteristics of really good Montepulciano – incredibly deep coloured with perfumes of chocolatey and coffee on the nose. Warm, rich and spicy wine on the palate, it has great balance between robust chunky fruit and soft tannins.
