Rioja

Gone are the average wines of a generation ago (well, not completely gone, but not here anyway) to be replaced by exciting wines that look to Bordeaux and the New World for their guidance. A new generation of winemakers has grappled control from the old guard and with this has come the pursuit of quality over quantity.

Young winemakers are combining old vines and old varieties with new technologies and new philosophies. Nowhere is this more evident than at Palacios Remondo estate in Rioja, headed up by Alvaro Palacios who cut his teeth at Chateau Petrus and in Priorat. His La Montesa Rioja is a headline grabbing superstar.

La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Rioja Reserva 2000 MAGNUM (LTD AVAILABILITY)

La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Rioja Reserva 2000 MAGNUM (LTD AVAILABILITY)

Enjoy 2010 - 2018 +

There are three great Reserva's at La Rioja Alta, Alberdi, Arana and Ardanza. This, the latter is traditionally the richest and most expressively fruity. Some say this is due, at least in part, to a large splash of Garnacha (aka Grenache) in the blend, reaching around one-fifth. Like all the 'Alta' Reservas the wine is aged in 4 year old American oak for three years and then kept in bottle for a further two before release.

La Rioja Alta Mixed Reservas Case 2010

La Rioja Alta Mixed Reservas Case 2010

2010 - 2015

This case contains 4 bottles of each of the 3 Reserva wines, Alberdi Reserva 2003, Arana Reserva 2001 and Ardanza Reserva 2000. To say that these wines are silky smooth and perfumed would be an understatement. They exhibit that special combination of power and elegance, specific only to regions like Barolo, Burgundy and Rioja. Alberdi is structured and weighty, Aranza is super-silky and Ardanza is easily the richest and most expressively silky. All are mature and ready to enjoy but of course, being La Rioja Alta they will cellar for many more years. You can read much more about all three on our website by clicking this link – La Rioja Alta 2010.

The 1995 Gran Reserva 890 has a slightly deeper color than the 904. It offers a similar alluring fragrance but more grip, richness, and intensity. The wine is very long with a 60+ second finish, the personification of classic Rioja at its best. Drink it now through 2020. Jay Miller,Wine Advocate 95/100

La Rioja Alta Vina Alberdi Reserva 2003

La Rioja Alta Vina Alberdi Reserva 2003

Enjoy 2003 - 2012

Because the ripening process was halted by extreme temperatures and a lack of rainfall in July and August, the 2003 crop required technically demanding procedures aimed at enhancing quality. La Rioja Alta, S.A. decided on a selective harvest and only the vineyards in the highest areas provided the grapes to produce this Viña Alberdi.

La Rioja Alta Vina Arana Rioja Reserva 2001

La Rioja Alta Vina Arana Rioja Reserva 2001

Enjoy until 2016

The odd thing about Vina Arana Reserva La Rioja Alta 2001 is that on first sip it isn't so much Rioja you think of as Red Burgundy. It reminded me of one of the most delicious wines I've ever been lucky enough to taste, a 2000 Clos des Lambrays... The similarity wasn't so much in the taste as in the texture – this is the smoothest, silkiest, most fluid of Riojas. It has the same racy flow, that flawless rush, you sometimes find in Riesling... and which people love to find, and all too rarely do, in a Pinot Noir... La Rioja Alta, the Bodega, has been around for almost 120 years and the wine has a certain old-fashioned quality – despite its fluency, it contains flavours that make me think of russet leaves, damp straw and strawberries left unpicked for so long they overripen. Look, I guess I'm saying I liked it. Victoria Moore - The Guardian

A dark cherry colour with good depth. Balsamic aromas with hints of ripe fruit, complex and spicy. The attack is fresh and light, with soft, rounded tannins.
