Italy

The best wines in Italy are a match for fabulous fashion of Milan and the supercars of Maranello. Effortless style comes easy to the Italians and this is reflected in their wines.  Italy is the only country to challenge France on the quality and diversity stakes and recent releases should make their neighbours accross the Alps very nervous indeed.

Our portfolio of Italian wines is a who's who of the great and the good in Modern Italian winemaking, reflecting the geographical extremes of this "land of wine". In Piedmont we work with Gaja and Bruno Giacosa whilst in Veneto we proudly represent the wines of Allegrini and Alpha Zeta.  In Tuscany we would like to draw your attention to the wines of Fattoria Le Sorgenti as well as the grand estates of Querciabella, Ornellaia, Sassicaia & Ca'Macanda.  There has been a quiet revolution in the white wines of Italy no more so than in Soave, lead by Pieropan.  His La Rocca Soave Classico is one of the world's greatest white wines.

Our Italian list is always changing and occasionally wines are secured in such tiny quantities that they could not be added to our list.  Register for our Newsletter and Email updates in order not to miss out. Enquiries to sip@harperwells.com

Wine Spectator Magazine has just scored the 2007 vintage a massive 98/100. This has a great color, with fabulous aromas of crushed blackberry, violet, toasty oak and black olive. Full-bodied, with powerful, ripe tannins and amazing flavors of blueberry, dark chocolate and toast. Lasts for minutes on the palate. Reminds me of the 1989 Pétrus. A stunning Merlot. Best after 2012. 1,250 cases made. 98/100 –James Suckling

Fontodi’s Syrah, now ranked as one Italy’s top examples of this variety is a stunning northern Rhone lookalike. Indeed Wine Spectator called it the ‘La Turque’ of Italy in homage to Guigals £200 a bottle Cote Rotie ‘classique’. It is clearly a wine of similar elegance and poise.

A Megastar at an Afordable Price, Matthew Jukes, Moneyweek, Feb 2010. Deep, ruby red in colour, with intense perfumes of cherry-chocolate on the nose. On the palate the wine has good depth and power, with a hint of dried cherries from the ‘ripasso’ vinification. Smooth and full-bodied, with a rounder style, lower acidity and fuller structure than a Valpolicella Classico.

ALLOCATION ONLY. PLEASE CALL FOR AVAILABILITY. 96 points, Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: The 2006 Flaccianello della Pieve (Sangiovese) is just as phenomenal as it was when I tasted it from barrel. This spectacularly ripe and concentrated wine reveals masses of dark cherries, plums, licorice, smoke, violets, French oak and minerals that coat the palate with extraordinary richness. The wine possesses plenty of structure, but the sheer density of the fruit provides stunning balance. The 2006 Flaccianello is one of the more primary wines of the vintage, and it will require considerable patience. Flaccianello continues to prove that Panzano’s Conca d’Oro is one of the most privileged spots for Sangiovese in Tuscany. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.

The ‘Vigna del Sorbo’ a single vineyard wine made from 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon is as seemless and elegant as the best of Fontodi’s wines. The Cabernet is barely perceptible, yet its gentle cassis character gives the wine an added dimension of spiciness rather than swamping its delicacy. Fontodi only makes this in the best vintages and so no 2005 was produced.

“The 2006 Briccoserra is a tasty, flavorful red loaded with ripe dark fruit. This medium to full-bodied red possesses outstanding depth and clarity, along with layers of gorgeous aromatics that continue to open up in the glass.
