Portugal

An industry built on the cornerstones of Port, Vinho Verde and Mateus Rose, Portugal has been late coming to the party for cutting-edge modern wine producers.  But like all late-commers Portugal has made one hell of an entrance.  Leading Port houses like Niepoort have simmultaneously deconstructed the Port Industry and reinvented themselves, finding the sort of niche that Paul Smith has found in tailoring and Radiohead have in modern music. At the same time the Douro is discovering that its greatest wines do not have to be fortified and small quality obsessed wineries are becoming established accross The Dao and Alentejo regions in particular. It is unlikely that any of these regions are anywhere close to their potential yet - so watch this space!

Ripe, full and very modern Portuguese wine made by the Barossa's Tim Smith. The 2005 Azamor is a deep coloured wine, rich with spicy and brambly fruit. Coupled with the intense fruit aromas, there are lighter violet and floral notes. The palate has a good balance of fruit and tannin, giving the wine a beautiful structure.

Niepoort Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) 2001

Niepoort Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) 2001

Niepoort's LBV is an extremely unusual offering, being the product of a single vintage harvested from 70-year-old vines, and the grapes trodden by foot in lagares. The materials and process is identical to making his vintage Port, except the LBV is aged longer in casks and barrels to produce a wine that is ready to drink on release.
