New Zealand

Amazing rugby, the Maori, long white clouds, snow topped mountains, rivalry with the Aussies and Sauvignon Blanc that has captured the hearts and minds of a generation of English-speaking wine drinkers.  To many, New Zealand, and Marlborough in particular is the only wine-producing region to take on the establishment and win - hands down, no debate, no-re-count and certainly no re-match! Their gooseberry and asparagus infused fruit-driven Sauvignon Blanc is no the reference point for this popular variety.

But New Zealand is not a one trick pony.  Their Chardonnay, forever in the shadow of the Sauvignon is, without doubt, world class and regions like Central Otago and Marlborough make Pinot Noir that only Burgundy and Oregon can surpass.  Varieties that typically enjoy a warmer climate such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and even Syrah are learning to thrive, most noticeably in North Island's Hawkes Bay area.  In addition New Zealands sparkling wines are an outstanding alternative to Champagne.

Our New Zealand selection is headed up by Mansion House Bay, Kim Crawford and Cloudy Bay.  Our Cloudy Bay wines, in particular, are on allocation only and you must register an interest with us.

The Gimblett Gravels is a unique sub-region of Hawkes Bay. Some of the very first vineyards at Trinity Hill were planted here in 1987 and led directly to recognition when the first wines were made from the 1997 vintage. By 2001 this sub-region had become so well respected that the wines sourced exclusively from it could be labeled ‘Gimblett Gravels’, something akin to the French AOC system. Each case includes 2 bottles of the various Gimblett Gravel wines.

Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2008, Hawkes Bay

Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2008, Hawkes Bay

Drink 2011 - 2018

The colour of the 2008 is a deep, vibrant crimson. Blackberry, black pepper, savoury and spice elements are prominent. Multi-layered complexity is the aim. Powerful but ripe and round tannins give the wine great structure. Oak aging plays a minor part and the wine lives on its fruit. Combined with good acidity, mineral, earthy and tarry characters result in a wine that is distinctly Northern Rhone-like rather than resembling any thing Australian.

Intense, brilliant golden-yellow/green in colour with aromas of orange blossom, cumquat peel and jasmine. Full, rich and soft on the palate; the exotic and sensual nature of this wine makes it a great substitute for Chardonnay or Pinot Gris. Hard not to Love!

Less than 10% malo-lactic fermentation was used, to retain the as much of the pure Chardonnay character as possible. Lees aging and regular stirring was used to increase complexity and mouth feel.

Trinity Hill Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Hawkes Bay

2010 - 2011

As great as it's ever been the flavours and aromas of passionfruit and nectarine gently compliment the delicate aroma of gooseberries in the 2009. A mineral character lends a distinctly Graves-like character to the wine. The addition of Semillon has added to the texture and flavour. The fresh acid is balanced by a tiny amount of retained sweetness.

Trinity Hill Hawkes Bay Trinity 2006, Hawkes Bay

Drink 2010 - 2013

Each grape variety was harvested and vinified separately.  The blackberry and black pepper nuances of Syrah, the leather and plum aromas of Merlot and the lifted red currant character of Cabernet Franc have combined to produce a complex, fruit dominated wine. The oak aging has added a further dimension to the wine without being obvious. Its richness with firm, ripe tannins make this wine extremely serious yet eminently drinkable.
