Nothing is simple in the South. Estremadura, the Alentejo and the Algave conspire to produce wines of confusing brilliance or uniformly poor simplicity.
Relaxing amongst the vines in Portugal
The Algave is the least distinguished region in Portugal though there are some pockets of excellence. To the North-East is the Alentejo, home to Portugal’s easiest to enjoy, plump, fruity and generously spicy wines. Around Lisbon in Ribatejo and Estremadura the theme tends towards bulk production for the city of Lisbon.
