Abadia Retuerta Selección Especial 2008

Very intense dark black cherry colour. Attractive nose, with perfumes of fresh red fruit and hints of eucalyptus well integrated with the oak character, complemented by aromas of roasted coffee and caramel. Soft and appealing initially, it opens up nicely in the mouth revealing the excellent balance between structure, fruit and alcohol. Soft, ripe tannins and good long length.

 

Abadia Retuerta

First planted in 1991, primarily on the northern, stonier and less fertile side of the Duero valley, the vineyards surround the stunning 12th Century Santa María de Retuerta monastery, to the west of the region.  We've been tracking these wines and enjoying their charms since they were first imported to the UK in the late 90s.

The estate covers 700 hectares, of which 204 are planted to vine. 65% of the vineyards are planted with Tempranillo, with 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. The vines are planted along a range of slopes running down to the southern bank of the River Duero from a maximum altitude of 850m. The estate comprises 54 crus that are identified by their soil composition, orientation, grape variety and microclimate. Fruit from each cru is vinified separately, giving winemaker Angél Anocibar a broad range of blending wines from which to sculpt the Abadia Retuerta wines.
