Grapes are grown on the estate’s 104 hectares of vineyard which are situated at approximately 150-200 metres above sea level, facing south, south-east and south-west. Soils are schistous clay with limestone.

Vintage information
Summer conditions were very favourable in 2007, producing excellent, clean fruit harvested at ideal maturity. June and July were hot months, but rain fell in the second half of August, helping swell the berries. September was sunny, ensuring the Sangiovese grapes were harvested under ideal conditions. The Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested in early October, although interupted by a few showers, this had no effect on the quality of the grapes, due to the thickness of the skins. Harvest concluded on 10th October.

Vinification
Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks for 25 days at 18-25°C. The wine aged in 3.5 hectolitre tonneaux for 14 months, followed by 6 months in bottle before release.

Ruby red colour with a restrained, elegant nose. Perfumes of dark cherry and liquorice give way to spice and plums on the palate. Rounded tannins from the Sangiovese are lifted by the cassis concentration of the Cabernet and melt into a long, perfumed finish.

Antonio Galloni, 91 points

The 2007 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana is a huge extroverted wine bursting with wild dark cherries, grilled herbs and tobacco. The intense, opulent style is not for the faint of heart. This is a beautifully balanced wine with notable intensity and persistent finish.

Rich of (ripe, puffy) tannin and dense black fruit, it‘s more chew than sip; richly rendered, gorgeously sweeping length.

Capezzana

Ed Wells visited the Carmignano DOC, on the edge of Chianti to taste with the winemaker.  He certainly didn't expect to taste back to the 1930 vintage, so it's safe to say that these wines are age-worthy!

The younger generation of the Contini Bonacossi family is now firmly in charge of this estate, with the highly talented Stefano Chioccioli giving them a hand in the winery.  Since Chioccioli’s first vintage in 1998, the quality of the reds has taken a huge leap forward. The estate of Capezzana, owned and run by the Conti Contini Bonacossi, has 12 centuries of wine-making history, based on a parchment document dating back to the year 804 stating that Capezzana was rented together with its "vineyards and olive groves". This is one of the oldest existing documents on wine production and testifies 1200 years of wine production at Capezzana, in the Carmignano DOCG area. The vineyards cover 100 hectares in Carmignano, 24 kilometres north west of Florence. Barco Reale was the biggest property belonging to the Medici Grand Dukes, and the Capezzana estate was part of this property. It was surrounded by a wall 50 kilometres long and 2 metres high. In 1716, Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici issued a decree (Decretu motu Proprio) which effectively demarcated the Carmignano zone.
