Chateau de Campuget is a top quality estate near Nimes with a long history. In the cellar, tradition and progress unite to provide great wines with all the aroma, finesse and bouquet that one would expect from this region. Chateau de Campuget deploys a wide range of traditional Rhone varietals to produce full, easy and spicy wines, which drink brilliantly in their youth. This 2009 Costieres is a blend of 65% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 5% Mourvedre and is a classic example of Campuget’s style.

The Costieres de Nimes AOC, the easternmost appellation of the Languedoc is effectively part of the Rhone, since the climate, soil and topography are so similar to those just over the river in the southern Cotes-du-Rhone vineyards. As a direct result, the region produces, and is most famous for, predominantly red wines made from Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault. Between the low rocky hills and garrigue that mark the border of the Languedoc and Provence with the low sandy plain of the Camargue and the Rhone delta, the soil is mostly a mixture of round pebbles ("galets") similar to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and sandy alluvial deposit and red shale, which provides the perfect foil for these very attractive Southern-Rhone style wines.

Fresh cherry and raspberry aromas attracted us into the glass, with delightful elegant aromatic herbal and floral notes and a touch of traditional ‘garrigue’ spice. Soft crushed red and black fruit followed with a mid-weight palate full of warm, spicy cassis fruit all enveloped in a snug blanket of fine tannins, balanced by lovely juicy acidity. Easily one of the most impressive Costieres de Nimes examples I’ve come across, drinking perfectly now and will continue to do so for the next few years with ease. 8/10 Daniel Milburn, HarperWells, Jan 2012
