Hilltops was our biggest selling New World red when we released the 2007 vintage.  It has classic Northern Rhone structure with a touch of Aussie flesh.

Dr John Kirk founded Clonakilla vineyard at Murrumbateman, 40 kilometres north of Canberra, in 1971 after his scientific curiosity led him to question why vines were not being grown in this area. His research showed that the soil and climate seemed suited to certain varieties. In 1997 Tim Kirk, the fourth of John’s six sons, took over responsibility for winemaking. Today, Clonakilla is recognised as one of the leading estates in Australia.

The grapes for this Shiraz were selected from three vineyards in the Hilltops district around Young in New South Wales, the Canberra District’s closest neighbouring wine region. The altitude is marginally lower than Canberra so the grapes tend to come in around two weeks before those grown on the estate. Soils are deep red loams over light clay, giving distinctive blackberry and blackcurrant notes to the wine, reminiscent more of the Northern Rhone than the Barossa Valley.

2010 was the year the drought broke. The rain started on Christmas Day 2009 and fell on a number of occasions through summer and early autumn. The water was a blessing for thirsty vines, but choosing picking dates became a race against the weather. As it turned out, the last of the Hilltops fruit came in just before the heavens opened. The grapes were in excellent condition.  The grapes were destemmed and fermented warm together with 20% whole bunches. The wine was matured for 11months in French oak, 15% new. The wine was racked once during its maturation in oak.

Deep colour and a vibrant aroma of dark cherries, blackcurrants, summer herbs and spice. The palate is warm and inviting with plenty of crunchy tannin.

Savoury…bilberry perfume, leaf, herb, earth and spice bouquet. Packed with crunchy black and red fruit with an incense lift. Integrated tannins.

So correct and dry and fresh and proper! This is real wine with a story. Very good value. Flirtatious and silky.

There‘s a dash of Viognier in this classic Aussie Shiraz...which here seems to give some extra aromatic lift to what is a fabulously pure black-fruited beauty. Dense and powerful but vivid and full of life.

Full red-purple...the bouquet is complex, with warm spices threaded through dark cherry and blackberry fruit, the medium- to full-bodied palate with ripe fruit complemented by firm tannins and quality oak.

Crimson. Sweet and direct nose. I thought at first I was going to encounter yet another cookie cutter vibrant Aussie Shiraz but it’s much more complex on the palate. Real grunt and earthiness.

A terrific wine... It has a touch of Australian mintiness paired with a dark cocoa note, a combination that brought to mind Bendicks’ bittermints, as well as rich, spicy, dark fruit.  It’s a generous wine, but plush tannins and fresh acidity prevent it from tipping over into caricature.

A cooler year and this is a fabulous celebration of spice.  Lovely life, lift and texture to its cinnamon-edged succulent black cherry and berry fruit with liquorice.  A cool clay tang lends texture and bottom to the long finish.  Terrific.

Clonakilla

Clonakilla is one of the leading estates in Australia, with a mission to create distinctive, hand-crafted wines. They have an enviable reputation for their Shiraz Viognier. Clonakilla means ‘meadow of the church’ in gaelic and is the name of the founder’s grandfather’s farm in County Clare, Ireland.

In 1971, Dr John Kirk founded Clonakilla vineyard at Murrumbateman, 40 kilometres north of Canberra, after his scientific curiosity led him to question why vines were not being grown in this area. His research showed that the soil and climate seemed suited to certain varieties. In 1991 Tim Kirk, the fourth of John’s six sons, travelled to the Rhone Valley. There he tasted a number of inspirational Shiraz wines including Marcel Guigal’s single vineyard blends of Shiraz and the white grape Viognier. Inspired by those wines they began including a small amount of Viognier in the Clonakilla Shiraz as of 1992. Tim took over responsibility for winemaking at the 12 hectare family farm in 1997. Clonakilla now produces about 10,000 cases per year, which sell out year on year.
