The Mazzei family have been the proprietors of the Castello di Fonterutoli since 1435 and they dedicate this Riserva to their noble ancestor Ser Lapo, who was the author of the first official document to mention “Chianti wine” (December 16th, 1398).  They are one of the big players in the region producing both high volume blends and a number of very traditional, tiny bottlings of VERY special wines.  One of these is the Ser Lapo Riserva.

The Grape Varieties used in Ser Lapo are old vine selections of hand-picked Sangiovese with 10% Merlot – grown on limestone dominated sites at between 220 and 500 metres over sea level. Both the Sangiovese and the Merlot components are barrel aged in 225 ltr French oak, of which 50% is new, for 12 months. This produces textbook Chianti Classico with bitter Morello cherry notes, nicely taut structure and food friendly finish. Drink 2012 – 2019+
"Blueberry and sandalwood aromas, with loads of subtle fruit. Full body, with super velvety tannins and a long, long finish. This is classy and focused. Gorgeous wine. Best Chianti Classico ever from here. Drink or hold . 95/100" James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com

Castello di Fonterutoli

The estate measures around 500 hectares in total and is divided among four key production areas: Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola and Belvedere. Another exponent of the ‘Château’ concept, the Fonterutoli portfolio starts with the estate’s first wine, Castello di Fonterutoli, a riserva style ‘super’ Chianti Classico, which was awarded the Tre Bicchieri (three glasses) award this year for the 2007 vintage, and is joined by the second wine, Fonterutoli Chianti Classico. The renowned Siepi (Sangiovese/Merlot) is a Super-Tuscan single vineyard expression heralded as among the top releases from Italy in any given year – and a deserved Tre Bicchieri (three glasses) winner in 2010. Their Chianti Classico Riserva ‘Ser Lapo’ recently bagged 5 stars in Decanter Magazine.
