Aldo Vajra’s wines are characterised by pristine flavours and clearly defined perfumes.  These characters are attributable to the position of his vineyards at about 400 metres above sea level in the village of Vergne in the commune of Barolo. G.D. Vajra was established in 1972 and named after Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico. Aldo has been gradually increasing the area under vine to 40 hectares, of which 10 are Nebbiolo for Barolo, located in such strategic spots as Bricco delle Viole, Fossati, La Volta and Coste di Vergne. A traditionalist, Aldo adheres to old-style winemaking methods, though blends these with new techniques, such as temperature controlled fermentation, to produce such superbly elegant wines.

The Pinot Noir grapes for this wine are grown on Bricco di Vergne, the highest vineyard on the hill which rises through the village of Barolo therefore unsuitable for Nebbiolo. Vajra has created this Piemontese tribute to one of his favourite grape varieties, Pinot Noir, which he feels is a point of reference for many producers and lovers of Nebbiolo. The vineyard was planted in 1999, covers 1.2 hectares at an altitude of 497m above sea level on sandy marine soils, with ancient fossilised deposits. The vineyard faces south and is planted at a density of 4,800 vines per hectare with natural turfing between the rows. The vines are mixed guyot trained.

Maceration for 15-20 days to a maximum of 32°C with regular punching down of the cap and fermentation with natural yeasts. The wine matured for 18 months in 4-500L French oak barrels.

This wine has great structure supporting the ripe strawberry fruit and soft leather character. The palate has lovely depth, rounded tannis and fine acidity keeping the juicy fruit in check. The elegant finish rounds off with a red fruit note.

GD Vajra

Vajra defends his approach, saying that "traditional wines are more elegant, with more delicate perfumes, leaner, somewhat difficult, but offering more pleasure at the table." His wines lack the power found in those from Serralunga or Monforte, but thanks to Aldo’s skill in the vineyard and his deft touch in the winery, the wines have a sinewy texture, a Burgundian intensity and a purity of flavour that makes them stand out in Barolo.

The estate was established in 1972, by Aldo Vajra’s father, Giuseppe Domenico and his sons Giuseppe and Isidoro now work together with Aldo. The vineyards had been in the family since the 1920s, but it was only with the advent of DOC, and the increase in interest for Barolo in the early 1970s, that viticulture became economically viable. Aldo has gradually increased the area under vine to the current 40 hectares, of which ten are planted with Nebbiolo for his Barolo, located in such prized vineyards as Bricco delle Viole, Fossati, La Volta, Coste di Vergne. Vajra`s vineyards are more than 50 years old and are located in the commune of Barolo, in Vergne, onthe western border of the zone. The soil is rich in calcareous marl, with rocky outcrops, giving elegant, fragrant and particularly long-lived wines. The vineyards are situated about 400 metres above sea level.Vajra’s vineyards ripen later than in many other areas and crus in the region, with the result that his Barolos have always been quite distinctive: wines with fresh and lifted aromas, showing a judicious acidity that balances the generous fruit to give a lively and crisp style.
