Students of the Barossa vineyard landscape know that it is a fascinating mosaic of soils and microclimates and can produce an extraordinary range of wines each reflective of their particular terroir. Through Lehmann’s network of over 160 independent Barossa grape growers, they have access to a portfolio of vineyards that has no peer in the Barossa winemaking community. Earlier last year Dean Harper visited the Barossa and became the only British wine merchant to be offered a parcel of Lehmann’s rare 2009 VSV (Very Special Vineyards) wines, wines so great that they have kept them for themselves, selling only at the Cellar Door for the past decade. Only made in the best years from single-site extremely low yielding, gnarled and twisted family-owned vines these are amongst the finest boutique-produced examples of their kind.

This incredibly pure Shiraz is made purely from the Orrock family vineyard, perched 380 metres above sea level in the Southern Flinders Ranges, two hours north of Tununda and actually bordering The Outback. The vineyard is super low yielding, with soils of red-brown earth with a bit of ironstone and limestone, making at a remarkable, near-perfect site for Shiraz.

Winemaker Note: Dense black colour with deep red/purple at the rim. Aromas of dark fruits, liquorice and aniseed. Hints of salt bush redolent of the Southern Flinders region. A rich mouth-filling drop with dark savoury fruits, balanced by soft yet firm tannins. It is a muscular brooding wine of immense concentration, (a hallmark of these vineyards). A majestic Shiraz which will reward with further cellaring for 3-10 years.

Dean Harper Note: Lovely lifted, perfumed nose similar to some very fine Clare Valley Shiraz – almost a Cabernet Sauvignon elegance and profile. The tannins are young and firm, and there is a clear hint of eucalyptus and mint. 9/10.

Peter Lehmann

The Peter Lehmann story is one of survival. In the face of a serious overproduction of grapes and the real possibility of growers facing financial ruin, Peter Lehmann found some investment partners, established a consortium and built the Peter Lehmann Wines winery. It was 1979.

The first vintage was processed in 1980 and in 1982 the winery was formally named Peter Lehmann Wines. From then on, its wines have been marketed under the Peter Lehmann Wines label. As an experienced winemaker, Peter Lehmann was all too aware of the challenges facing a young winery in a competitive market. Growth was well planned, slow and steady. Initially, the winery facility was built to process fruit purchased from the local growers. Carefully and strategically, the Peter Lehmann Wines operation moved on from the bulk wine market to become a producer of premium bottled wines with a well-deserved international reputation.

Today, Lehmann enjoy close relationships with 185 local independent growers, as well as harvesting from their own vineyards.

We focus on their ‘Excellence Collection’ and five wines in particular; Futures Shiraz, Wigan Riesling, Margaret Semillon, Mentor Cabernet and, of course, Stonewell Shiraz. There is a strong argument that under the guidance of head winemaker Andrew Wigan that Stonewell Shiraz has become one of the finest premium Shiraz in the world.

Fan's of something a little more "out of the ordinary" may be excited by their world famous Peter Lehmann Black Queen Sparkling Shiraz, perhaps the most famous of its type in the world
