Jean-Max Roger Sancerre Cuvee GC is a much loved wine amongst our customers – offering absolutely everything that you would expect from a first class Sancerre – freshness, character, lots of herb and fruit characters and quintessential Loire style. The vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are much further inland than much of the Loire, with a more continental feel to the winters. This means that they were somewhat protected from the unusually cool start to 2010, with April, June and July being warmer than the typical, the latter being the most impressive with an average high of 27.4ºC, nearly 2ºC above the 1971-2000 mean. As with Touraine, however, the later months saw temperatures fall back a little, allowing a steady and long ripening season giving the grapes excellent acids and lots of complexity and ripeness. Rainfall was pretty much on target and very steady throughout the year, with only April worthy of any comment; this was a very dry month, with just 11mm against an average of 58mm. On the whole there were good to great wines produced throughout the region, with firmer backbones and acidities than some other recent vintages perhaps with a little more longevity from the better producers.
Cuvee GC is one of the most famous vineyards in Sancerre. Jean-Max Roger harvests from a 6 hectare plot; planted exclusively with Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Once harvested the grapes are pressed on arrival at the winery. Fermentation is in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 15 to 17°C. This temperature promotes aromatic qualities but is warm enough to allow complex flavours to develop on the palate of the finished wine. To protect the freshness there is no malolactic fermentation and the wines are left on their flavour inducing yeasty lees until February or March following the harvest before being racked – this gives the wine a further dimension. A final racking takes place before filtration and bottling for the 2010 took place in May this year. No one trick pony Cuvee GC is a classic Sancerre and is not a wine that would ever be confused with a New Zealand or Chilean Sauvignon Blanc, no matter their quality. Drink 2011 – 2014.
"One of the greatest Sancerres I have ever tasted this spectacularly rich, full bodied, yet impeccably balanced fresh, honeyed style of Sancerre is dry, and crammed with smoky, herbaceous, melony flavours.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate. But Parker is not alone, Loire specialists like Jim Budd and Vincent Gasnier sing their praises as do many of the most repsected journals and international magazines.
