The domaine of Yann Chave, a family heritage in the heart of the northern Rhône and the Crozes Hermitage appellation, exists above all because of two mens' passion for their craft.
Yann and his father, Bernard, have transformed this domaine into a reference for wine lovers looking for a combination of subtlety and generosity. Yann himself is a passionate man, and his character speaks through his wines.

The traditional cuvee is produced from vines grown on the three village terroirs: Mercurol, La Roche de Glun and Pont de l’Isère. There are several plots planted at different times, but the average age of vines is 20 years. The varietal is exclusively Syrah. Leaves are trimmed around the fruit for optimal exposure to sunlight, and grapes are harvested by hand. As with our white wines, we do not use industrial yeasts. Grapes are de-stemmed, and we allow the vinification temperature to warm up gradually from 20° to 30°C, which we maintain, to achieve optimal extraction. Vatting lasts 3 weeks on average, pumping over twice a day, and we always try to wet the whole surface of the cap. Ageing is in tank to preserve the fruit character, without the addition of oak. The Crozes Hermitage red 2011 is ruby red with a nose of forest berries; the tannins are supple and elegant. It is ideal with white meats.

“Yann Chave’s story is similar to Reynaud’s; he took over the family estate in 1996, converted the estate to organic viticulture and started bottling his own wine. He’s noticed higher levels of acidity and better balance in his wines since he changed his viticultural approach.

His wines offer freshness and an understated power. He achieves this by picking relatively late to ensure full ripeness and opting for a long maceration but a very gentle extraction. Use of oak has changed in the region, he says: ‘Once it was all old, then all new; now it is more balanced.’ He compares Hermitage to a traditional old England and Crozes-Hermitage to the United States, the land of opportunity: It’s possible to achieve something here... there are always new things happening.” Matt Walls
