Domaine du Château Philippe Le Hardi
Formerly Château de Santenay, focused on revealing the quality of single-vineyard sites through sensitive winemaking. More gentle extraction and less new oak than in the past mean the wines today are supple, characterful expressions of their sites.
2019 Chambolle-Musigny
Light, elegant and floral. Very pretty red fruits and delicate tannins. Long strawberry and cranberry finish.
£500 per 6
2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru ‘Petite Chapelle’
The most elegant Gevrey-Chambertin at the tasting, bold ripe cranberry and redcurrant, a hint of cedar, lightly floral. That Gevrey smokiness. Chewy tannins, but it’s still young.
£915 per 6
2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
Delicious savoury aromas of smoke, cedar and earth over crunchy red and darker fruits. Violets and a long bramble and cedar filled finish. Exquisite.
£1,500 per 6
Domaine Chevalier
Established in 1850, with a total of 15 hectares under vine on south-easterly chalky-clay soils. Right on the doorstep of Aloxe-Corton, the wine I have chosen from their offering.
2021 Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru ‘Les Valozières’
Dark and savoury, a touch floral, but opening up to bright red fruits on the palate. Significantly more elegant than expected, with fine tannins and a long crunchy finish.
£610 per 6
Jane Eyre
Originally from Melbourne, Jane Eyre “fell in love” with Burgundy. She worked at Felton ROad and Ata Rangi in New Zealand, and has since been recognised as a top négociant in Europe, receiving ‘Négociant of the Year’ in 2021. Making very classic styles of Burgundy and some elegant New World Pinots too.
2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru ‘Aux Vergelesses’
Dark, rustic perhaps, savoury with bright strawberry and raspberry, firm tannins. Very good
£420 per 6
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin
Smoke, stones and bramble. Herbs and very fresh strawberry, blackberry and damson. Perhaps plum and a touch of sappiness.
£600 per 6
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret
With 30 hectares of vineyards in 35 Burgundy appellations ranging from village-level to Grand Cru, this Domaine is known to produce wines of elegance and intensity. Carefully selected fine-grain oak barrels are assembled by a local cooper at the domaine, with 30-40% new oak used on the Villages and Premier Crus, up to 100% on the Grand Crus depending on vintage.
2021 Bourgogne Hautes Còtes de Nuits ‘La Croix’
A wine already heading into savouriness. Bright with fresh strawberry and ripe raspberry, a touch stalky with a delicious touch of oak spice on the finish.
£640 per 12
2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune
Fresher, cooler, light strawberry and raspberry, fresh forest after rain (pretentious I know, but trust me). A generous palate with spiced cedar and bramble. Really very good.
£490 per 6
2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges ‘Les Plateaux’
Much darker in colour, fresh blood. Vibrant, bouncy black fruits and raspberry. Much more concentrated, with rustic herbs and toasty spice on the palate.
£790 per 6
2021 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru ‘En Orveaux’
Pine, light strawberry, cedar and camphor. Elegant raspberries and cherries, fresh, pure with a delightful floral note, hints of rose. Truly wonderful.
