Christy Canterbury MW has been visiting Burgundy every year since 2004, often spending several months getting under the skin of this ancient winemaking region.

So a top 25 ranking from the 100s of exceptional producers in the region is worth a second look.

Ten years ago serving burgundy when having someone over for dinner might have been considered the norm, nowadays you’re more likely to be asked if you’re hosting angel-investors who are picking up the tab.

Drinking Chanzy is bit more like the old days; their Rully vineyards stretch for about four kilometers to where it adjoins the Mercurey vineyards. Pinot Noir is in the minority but have a beautiful liveliness to them.

Clos de Bellecriox faces gently north and is almost always the last vineyard to be picked. With record breaking temperatures affecting the region, this is a significant advantage.

The 2021 vintage has a tight structure, but retains that classic seductive mix of red and black fruits that defies its  £30 price point. As it matures it should develop nicely, we think this has lots of potential over the next five years – but it’s worth highlighting that part of the joy of Chanzy, is that it produces wines that are made to be drunk and not cellared by angel-investors.

The offer: This is to be a delightful wedding wine for one of our customers, so I’ve added a couple of extra cases on our delivery from France that will save you about £50 a case on the shelf price.

Cheese & Wine Experience

1. Rachael Reserva, English

A hard goat cheese by Peter Humpries, it is the namesake of his friend who much like the cheese is sweet, curvy and just a little bit nutty.

Wine Paring: English Rosé, Lost in a field Pet Nat – A coupe of Magnums Left £60 each

2. Chaource, Champagne

Made in Burgundy since the middle ages, this cheese is prized for its snowy texture and trickling cream line. The long, slow set comes from the farmers’ historical habit of leaving their morning milk to rest as they went out to tend to their grapes.

Wine Paring: Bachey Legros, 2020 Santenay Rouge (Burgundy) – Good stock £39

3. Morbiere, Jura

Morbier was originally made by cheesemakers who lived in the village of Morez in the Jura Mountains of France. Situated in a deep valley a few miles from the Swiss border.

You’ll note the look of this cheese is quite distinctive with its horizontal gray-black line running through its middle. This line is actually a mixture of edible vegetable ash. The cheesemaker would press the leftover curd from the evening’s production of Comte into a round mold and cover that curd with a thin layer of ash to prevent it from drying out. The next day he pressed the leftover morning curd on top of the ash. You could tell which layer of the cheese came from the evening milking since it tastes fruitier than that from the morning milking

Wine Paring: Domaine de la Guicharde, 2017 Autour de la Chapelle Blanc (Cote du Rhone) – A few bottles left – £20 each

4. Beaufort d’et – Savoie AOP

Made only during the summer, at village dairies, from the milk of cows that enjoy lush alpine and mid-alpine meadows. Cheeses are selected once per year in the spring, and Paccard begins to release them once they reach twelve months old. This means that with every month that passes after that release, the cheese that reaches the market is one month older.

Wine Paring: Dopff, Grand Cru 2008 Schoenenbourg Riesling (Alsace) – a few bottles left £49 each

5. São Jorge, Azores

The isolated island chain found almost in the middle of the Atlantic.
São Jorge is indelibly linked with the volcanic archipelago’s history and economy.

Wine Pairing: Madera – good stocks from £20 (2010 Malmsey Colheita £79)
