South Africa

Bright 2019, Chardonnay

Sourced from three vineyards with very different soils; Elgin, Tulbagh and Franschhoek. Barrel fermented and aged in French Oak (15% New)

The original Paserene Chardonnay is powerhouse that will benefit from a decade in bottle. So it was a joy to find this little sibling so inviting – whipped lemon curd, neroli oil and jasmine on the nose, with a palate loaded with candied lemon peel, crystallised pineapple, creme patisierre, almond croissants loaded with marzipan and a toasty roundness. We can’t exalt this wine anymore! Over delivers in spades.

As Martin says, “A wine to drink and enjoy whilst you wait for the flagship range to mature!”

Cats Cradle

Cat’s Cradle is sourced from a single parcel of old bush-vine Chenin Blanc in Paardeberg and displays a bright, expressive Chenin character, replete with spiced apple, white peach and frangipane on a full, concentrated palate.

Chocolate Block

One of Tim Atkin’s South African First Growths, and from his Winemaker of the Year; Gottfried Mocke.

Ladies & Gentleman, I present you the 2019 Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block

Swartland (14.5%)

Based on Syrah with the remaining 29% made up of Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon and a soupçon of Viognier, this deservedly successful Swartland red has built up a worldwide following. Aromatic and supple, it has notes of ginger spice and sweet red berry fruit, a patina of toasty oak and supple tannin. Drinkable young but will develop further in bottle. 2022-26 – (92/00) TIM ATKIN  MW

Copper Pot, Pinot Noir

The wine shows aromas of bright pomegranate, hibiscus and red currants, with underlying exotic wood and juniper tones. In the mouth it is finely balanced showing good acidity and fine tannins, these being balanced out by generous red fruit and citrus zest. The finish is satisfyingly dry with a touch of spice and earthiness.

Dark 2018 Syrah

This syrah is sourced from two sites, one in the shallow low yielding soils of Tulbagh and the other in their more fertile Franschhoek vineayards.

A Syrah to transport you to South Africa! Like walking through a herb garden in the early evening, -bruised lavender and chopped thyme, the sweetness of blueberry and plums. A nod to Côte-Rôtie with bit of iodine and rock, but with gentle tannins and a lifted acid frame.

A crowd pleaser and extremely likeable.

Emerald 2019, Sauvignon Blanc

Sourced from two Cape regions; the first, Elgin, where the rocky shale soils bring great complexity and weight. The second, Franschhoek, where the fine sandy soils bring the tropical notes.

Don’t let the nose of this sauvignon blanc put you off – on first sniff, it’s certainly an unabashed sauvignon blanc, with masses of nettly, blackcurrant leaf notes, finely chopped green pepper, green apple and white pepper.

Don’t expect Emerald to be all Kiwi sauvignon; tropical, gooseberry and elderflower . Expect it to open and broaden with the palate brimming with Canteloupe melon, super ripe mango and passion fruit. Crying out to be paired with a baked goats cheese drizzled with honey, or radicchio with an orangey dressing!

Grenache Blanc SOLD OUT

Made with 100% Grenache Blanc grapes from Swartland. Grenache Blanc thrives here, on deep “koffieklip” soils where production is low due to dryland growing conditions. The combination of clay mixed with small stones gives good water retention while allowing the roots to penetrate deep into the soil. Cool Atlantic breezes shape the grapes’ expressive freshness.

Rosie 2019

A top pick for this summer. A Rhone inspired, 80% Carignan, 17% Mourvedre, 3% Syrah. Serious food friendly wine, neutral oak, textural and complex.

Pale in colour, packed full of summer fruits; Strawberries, fresh cherries and rose hips, with a pleasantly textured palate thanks to a good part of the wine being fermented and aged in old oak and adding a little cinnamon and spice to the finish. Very moreish and zingy finish.

Shiner No 2. 2018

100% Estate grown: 80% sauvignon blanc and 20% semillon gris.

Planted on sandy soils by the Franschhoek tasting room. Fermented in old oak and aged for just under two years in new and old French oak.

A rare find at this pice point, a complex and textural white Bordeaux blend; chamomile, grapefruit and greengages greet you on the nose.. Lilac and bergamot, developing on to the palate finishing with pineapple, honeydew melon with some herbaceous notes and a racy oyster shell acidity on the finish. Like a great Bordeaux Blanc from Graves, this will benefit from a little time in bottle, and will surely develop beautifully in the next few years, taking on more weight and those sought after notes of lanolin and baked apples.

Snakes & Ladders

Snakes & Ladders hails from a Sauvignon Blanc vineyard planted in 1985 in the Skurfberg mountains on the Cape’s west coast. This unusual Sauvignon Blanc displays subtle herbal tea inflections, green melon and a flinty, earthy smokiness. The palate is bold with a bracing acidity, which is tempered by the richly textured fruit.

Swartland Malbec (6bts)

From the Swartland’s granite-rich, alluvial soils which produce low yields of small concentrated berries. Hand picked and naturally fermented in stainless steel tanks. 30 % whole bunch, 70 % whole berry fermented to add complexity and tannin structure. The wine is pressed and returned to tank for Malolactic fermentation. 15% spends a few months in older 300 litre barrels.

Tin Soldier

The ‘Tin Soldier’ comes from a single parcel on the Paardeberg mountain in Swartland, which is believed to be the only 100% Semillon Gris vineyard in South Africa. The wine is deep auburn in colour, due to its partial fermentation on skins, and displays peppery, herbal notes with an underlying peach and lanolin character.

Wanderer’s Heart

The ‘Wanderer’s Heart’ is Thorne & Daughters’ Cape red blend. Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Grenache Gris, Mourvèdre and Syrah combine to create a layered wine with a brilliant lightness of touch, displaying cool-fruit and bright red berry perfumes.
