A classic left bank Bordeaux. Bold, black fruited, powerful but with Saint Estèphe elegance. Deep ruby colour with a hint of purple. Blackcurrant, crunchy redcurrant and bramble. Can’t choose between them? Why not try our Cramele Recas mixed 18 offer, £180 for 6 of each.

Back in 1988, three families decided to invest in a winery in Romania. Starting with 650 hectares of slightly unloved vineyards and a rusty, once state-owned winery.

Yet Englishman Philip Cox and his Romanian wife Elvira, have turned the Cramele Recas Estate into the most successful winery in Romania. Recas are now recognised globally for their impressive scale and breadth of fascinating wines. This includwa natural and orange wine from organic grapes. Despite the scale the emphasis is on making good wines that over-deliver, and as a result they’ve struck on a magic formula.

Their vineyards are a combination of evolved plantings from 1447 and more recent planting. The winery has also seen significant investment and boasts state of the art facilities where innovation thrives. Recas are in every way a modern, dynamic winery, whose open minded approach and quality sets them apart… a winery you really can’t ignore.

Click on the wines above for their individual details and tasting notes, right down to the viticultural techniques of each. If you need any more information, don’t hesitate to reach out to me at ryan@harperwells.com and I’ll do my best to help.

Tenuta Casenuove

A wine to get you through autumn:

Tenuta Casenuove

Located in the heart of the ancient Chianti Classico region, Tenuta Casenuove covers 105 hectares spread over a succession of hills and valleys. There are 28 hectares under vine (in organic conversion), planted high above the Pesa river at altitudes of 370 to 490 metres, in soils rich in the famed local galestro, a rocky, schistous clay terrain.

This Chianti balances dark fruits with freshness, a touch of spice and a subtle savouriness. Perfect for roast meats, hard cheeses and hearty autumnal fare, this is a wine we can’t get enough of.

Christy Canterbury MW has been visiting Burgundy every year since 2004, often spending several months getting under the skin of this ancient winemaking region.

So a top 25 ranking from the 100s of exceptional producers in the region is worth a second look.

Ten years ago serving burgundy when having someone over for dinner might have been considered the norm, nowadays you’re more likely to be asked if you’re hosting angel-investors who are picking up the tab.

Drinking Chanzy is bit more like the old days; their Rully vineyards stretch for about four kilometers to where it adjoins the Mercurey vineyards. Pinot Noir is in the minority but have a beautiful liveliness to them.

Clos de Bellecriox faces gently north and is almost always the last vineyard to be picked. With record breaking temperatures affecting the region, this is a significant advantage.

The 2021 vintage has a tight structure, but retains that classic seductive mix of red and black fruits that defies its  £30 price point. As it matures it should develop nicely, we think this has lots of potential over the next five years – but it’s worth highlighting that part of the joy of Chanzy, is that it produces wines that are made to be drunk and not cellared by angel-investors.

The offer: This is to be a delightful wedding wine for one of our customers, so I’ve added a couple of extra cases on our delivery from France that will save you about £50 a case on the shelf price.
